OmniVision OV6948 joins the Guinness Book of Records as the smallest camera in the world that is just 0.65 x 0.65 x 1.158 mm as low as a grain of sand.

The OmniVision OV6948 produces a color image of 40,000 pixels using a back-side illuminated chip from RGB Bayer. Each photosite is only 1.75 μm wide.

It also features a streamlined, integrated 4-pin interface and a broad 120-degree reading area along with an expanded range ranging from 3 mm to 30 mm.

Its image array captures at least 200200 resolution images, videos up to 30FPS, and an analog output capable of transmitting at minimal noise over 4 meters.

The company also stated that the camera sensor was initially developed for medical endoscopes with a limited outer diameter and can be designed for a wide range of applications, including dental, veterinary, IoT, automotive, mobile, and forensic devices.

The OVM6948, together with an evaluation kit, is now available for volume production in tray format.

“Due to the sensor’s low power consumption, less heat is generated at the distal tip of the endoscope, improving patient comfort and thus permitting longer-duration procedures. The sensor enables easy integration, with a 4-pin interface and analog data output, capable of data transmission of up to 4 meters with minimal signal noise.” Company said in a statement.

The Omnivision OV6948 is now the smallest photo camera on the market. The record is focused, as stated in the , on 10 April , on market research conducted by Transparency Market Research in Pune, India.
